    noncé et la princesse bannit au château d'Ahlden, où elle

    vivra encore 32 ans. Avec ses deux enfants, le futur roi

    d'Angleterre Georges II. et Sophie Dorothée, qui épousera

    Frédéric Guillaume de Prusse, le père de Frédéric le Grand,

    elle est l'aïeule de plusieurs familles princières européennes

  1705, à la mort de Georges Guillaume, la principauté de

    Lunebourg fusionne avec l'Électorat de Hanovre. Celle de-

    vient hanovrienne et perd son statut de résidence princière

  993 wurde Celle erstmals genannt als kellu, kille (am Wasser

    gelegen). Der Ort lag an der Aller, in Altencelle

    unter seinen drei Söhnen aufgeteilt

  1292 wurde die Stadt, nach dem Brand der Burg, an ihren

    heutigen Platz vom Welfenherzog Otto der Strenge verlegt

  1371 nahm Herzog Magnus hier seine Residenz

  1378 verlegte Herzog Albrecht die Residenz des Fürstentums

    Braunschweig-Lüneburg von Lüneburg nach Celle

  1378-1705 wurde Celle bis Erlöschen der Celler Linie

  1527 wurde die Reformation vom Herzog Ernst dem Bekenner

  1665-1705 regierte der Heideherzog Georg Wilhelm. Er

    vermählte sich mit der französischen Hugenottin Eleonore

    Desmier d'Olbreuse. Ihre einzige Tochter Sophie Dorothea  

    heiratete 1682 den Erbprinzen Georg Ludwig von Hannover,

    der 1714 als Georg I. von England wurde. Ihr Liebes-

    verhältnis mit dem Grafen Philipp von Königsmark wurde

    aufgedeckt, der Graf heimlich umgebracht, die Ehe geschie-

    den und die Prinzessin auf das Schloss Ahlden verbannt,

    wo sie noch 32 Jahre lebte. Mit ihren beiden Kindern, dem

    späteren König Georg II. von England und Sophie Dorothea,

    die Friedrich Wilhelm von Preußen, den Vater Friedrichs

    des Großen, heiratete, wurde sie Stammmutter mehrerer

    Herrscherhäuser

  1705 wurde das Fürstentum Lüneburg mit dem Kurfürstentum

    Hannover vereinigt. Celle wurde hannoversches und keine

    Residenzstadt mehr

  1711 Errichtung des Oberlandesgerichts

  1735 Gründung des Landgestüts. Anstelle der Hofleute gab

    es nur noch eine neue Gesellschaftsschicht aus adligen

  Im 7jährigen Krieg wurde Celle von den Franzosen besetzt

    und bald darauf die Befestigungen beseitigt und die Stadt-

    tore abgebrochen. Celle war bis zum heutigen Tag stets

    Standort einer großen Garnison (Hannoversches Potsdam)

  1772-1775 lebte im Schloss Königin Caroline Mathilde von

    Dänemark, eine Urenkelin Sophie Dorotheas und

    Schwester Georgs III. von England. Sie war mit 15 Jahren

    mit König Christian VII. von Dänemark vermählt worden,

    musste nach der Liebesaffäre mit Struensee Dänemark

    verlassen und in Celle ihren Wohnsitz nehmen. Sie starb

    hier im Alter von 24 Jahren

  1803-1813 erlebte Celle noch eine französische Besatzung

    und wurde dem Königreich Westfalen einverleibt.

  1814 wurde Hannover Königreich

  1837, nach dem Ende der Personalunion Hannovers mit

Brief History of the town of Celle

  993, first mentioned as kellu, kille (at the water’s edge). Located on the Aller River in Altencelle

  1202, the private holdings of Duke Heinrich the Lion are divided among his three sons

  1292, after a fire in the fortress the town is relocated to its present site by the Whelp Duke Otto the Strict

  1371, Duke Magnus takes up residence here

  1378, Duke Albrecht moves the royal residence of the principality of Brunswick. Lüneburg from Lüneburg to Celle

  1378-1705, Celle is the Whelp residence until the dissolution of the Celle line

  1527, the Reformation is introduced by Duke Ernst the Confessor

  1530, the town is enlarged toward the south

  1634, with the extinction of the Brunswick line, the Callenberger Land with its capital city Hanover comes into

    the possession of the Celle dukes.

  1665-1705, the Heide Duke Georg Wilhelm rules and becomes engaged to the French Huguenotte Eleonore

    Desmier d’Olbreuse. Their only daughter Sophie Dorothea marries the heir to the throne, George Ludwig of

    Hanover, who becomes George I of England in 1714. Her love affair with Earl Phillip of Königsmark is

   discovered, the Earl secretly murdered, the marriage divorced and the Princess banned to Castle Ahlden, where

   she lives for 32 years. Through her two children, her son later becoming King George II of England and her

   daughter Sophie Dorothea, who marries Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia, the father of Friedrich the Great. She

   becomes the progenitor of several ruling houses.

  1705, the principality of Lüneburg and the electorate principality of Hanover are united. Celle belongs to Hanover

   and is no longer the seat of residence.

  1711, Building of the Provincial Court

  1735, Founding of the country stud-farm. Instead of court personnel only one new upper class society exists

    consisting of aristocrats, civil servants, officers and lawyers

  In the Seven Years’ War Celle is occupied by the French and soon after the fortifications and town gates razed.

  Celle remains until today the location of a large garrison (Hanoverian-Potsdam)

  1772-1775, Queen Caroline Mathilde of Denmark, a great granddaughter of Sophie Dorothea and sister of

   George III of England, lives in the castle. She had been engaged to King Christian VII of Denmark when she

   was 15 years old, but because of a love affair with Struensee had to leave Denmark and take up residence in

   Celle. She dies here at the age of 24.

  1803-1813, Celle is once again occupied by the French and is incorporated in the Kingdom of Westphalia.
