Une première église fut construite sur les ruines d'un sanctuaire païen. Elle fut détruite au 10ème siècle par des invasions normandes. Vers 878 arrivèrent des reliques de la Vierge et l'église dédiée alors à Saint Étienne passa sous le vocable de Notre-Dame
