L'abbaye cistercienne de Schmölln fut déménagée en 1137 au bord de la Saale par l'évêque Udo I. et prit le nom d'abbaye de la Porte ou Sainte-Marie de la Porte Das Zisterzienserkloster aus Schmölln wurde 1137 von Bischof Udo I. an die Saale verlegt und bekam den Namen Kloster zu der Pforte oder St. Marien zur Pforte The Cistercian monastery in Schmölln was relocated to the Saale in 1137 by Bishop Udo I.

L'abbatiale fut consacrée en 1268 et placée sous la protection de Sainte Marie et de Saint Jean-Baptiste. Un incendie détruisit en 1450 la charpente et une partie des bâtiments avoisinants 1268 wurde die Kirche eingeweiht und neben der Hl. Maria auch Johannes dem Täufer als Schutzheiligen unterstellt. 1450 zerstörte ein Feuer das Dachgestühl und einen Teil der Nebengebäude The church was consecrated in 1268 with St. Mary and John the Baptist as patron saints.
